Rumor has it that Peter Cech is on Frank Rijkaard’s list to be transferred to Barcelona in January. Cech, by many considered the world’s best goalkeeper, said he loves life in London but would not rule out a move to Camp Nou. "So far I have been very happy at Chelsea and I've started to love the Premier League. I have got used to the way of life in London and my wife and I like it," he said. “But in the case of Barcelona showing interest, yes, certainly it would be worth considering." The 25 year old goalkeeper however, was just signed to a new 4-year deal. On top of that, Chelsea manager Avram Grant persuaded Christophe Lollichon to sign with Chelsea for years and he is believed to be the brains behind Cech’s success as his goalkeeper coach. |

In the early 80’s Bruce Grobbelaar became Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper and was part of a great legacy. The eccentric keeper, who was well-known for his amazing reflexes and reading of the game, feels that current Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has the same attributes in abundance. Speaking to Liverpoolfc.tv Grobbelaar discussed the keepers that have attempted to succeed him: "It's hard to say who is the best. Sander Westerveld was a great keeper and I honestly think he was pushed out too soon. David James might still be here if the original plan Graeme Souness came up with had been implemented. Souness asked me to be the number one and bring on James. It didn't happen because Souness didn't like me going back and forth to play for my country, Zimbabwe. He put James in too early and destroyed his confidence. I am pleased with the way it has gone for him now, though; he is doing really well." "Liverpool still need a goalkeeper who can come and sweep up at the back. That's the one thing Reina maybe needs to add to his game, anticipating when to come out and smother. Having said that, I do think he has the attributes to become one of the very best in the world. He is dealing with crosses better than he ever has – I think he's catching more often now, rather than punching." When asked about the quality of this season’s team and it’s potential Grobbelaar replied: "Rafa Benitez has got a fantastic core of players – they can knock on the door of the championship, I really believe that. If you look at the end of the season, the team that wins the league has always lost fewer than five games. We have lost none." |

Scott Carson has impressed England National Team manager Steve McLaren so much lately that he is set to start for England in their friendly against Austria on Friday. The 22 year old goalkeeper has been on loan to Aston Villa this season and has kept 5 clean sheets in 10 appearances for Villa thus far. However, under-fire goalkeeper Paul Robinson is expected to get the nod for England’s crucial qualifier against Croatia 5 days later to be played at Wembley. Robinson has suffered a lot of critisism despite keeping a clean sheet in 9 of his 11 qualifiers. Big Boss McLaren said: "I've been loyal to Robbo all the way through - as I always will be. He's never really let me down. The situation with the team and the keeper and the back four will be resolved once we get the squad together." |

Apparently there is still hope for Lehmann at Arsenal. The 38 year old hot headed German goalkeeper still has a chance to break back into the team, at least according to man in charge Arsene Wenger. "If the situation is still like this in January we will see," Wenger said. "We are still in November. November and December is plenty of time to win his place back. He is up for the challenge because he is 200 per cent professional.” Manuel Almunia has become the starting goalkeeper for Arsenal, and Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has been his backup. "Jens wants to play because he thinks he is the best keeper," Wenger said. "It makes it worse to put him in and out again. He has done nothing wrong. Almunia has been in the team and the team is doing well. It is as simple as that." Meanwhile German National Team coach Low has hinted that Lehmann should probably find a different team in January if his situation hasn’t changed. To which Lehmann responded: "Given what the Germany coach says, I will have to see how things are in December, I definitely want to play at Euro 2008. Playing there has always been my aim." Lehman even indicated he’s willing to drop down a level as long as he can play. "The Bundesliga is always attractive and is an option, and maybe the German second division is, too," he said, but he still has hope of replacing Almunia. "The situation is as it is. It is only important what the manager decides and I am using this phase to train intensively every day. The manager knows I am highly motivated. I would like to play again soon, and expect that I will do. I would be very surprised if that was not the case." |

Tottenham Hotspurs manage Juande Ramos made it clear when he took over the job; the goalkeeping position is one of the first positions that need strenghtening. This could very well mean that England goalkeeper Paul Robinson could be rejoined with former England boss Sven-Goan Eriksson who has always shown great faith in Robinson. Eriksson's Manchester City is in need of a goalkeeper after using three already this year, none of them having made the position their own. Kasper Schmeicel is out on loan to Cardiff City, Isaksson has been out with injury a lot and has been battling with Joe Hart for the number 1 spot. Adding Robinson to the roster seems to be a good fit for City. |

Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio dos Santos has played in Vietnam for the Dong Tam Long An football club for years and has fallen in love with the country and plans on staying there forever, he hopes he might even make the Vietnamese National Team. How? Well, Fabio is trying to become a Vietnamese National. The Brazilian Justice Ministry has allowed him to change his status and the 30 year old goalkeeper is now awaiting verification from the Vietnamese Ministry of Justice after which President Nguyen Minh Triet will have the final say in this application. Santos was interviewed by the Vietnamese press this week: How do you feel about giving up your Brazilian nationality? My parents support my decision. When I return to Brazil in the future, I will be a guest, not a citizen of the country that holds the World Cup championship five times. However, it is unimportant to me. So what are you thinking as you wait to be granted Vietnamese nationality? I’ve had great experiences in my six years here. I’ve lived in harmony with my colleagues at Dong Tam club, I’ve had a chance to devote myself and be trust by others. In becoming a Vietnamese citizen, I plan to contribute to the development of Vietnam football and to a more professional and successful Dong Tam club. What are your thoughts on becoming the goalkeeper for the national squad of Vietnam? If I’m lucky to have good health, I think I can play football at least five years more in the V-League. For a professional player, playing on a national team has always been a burning dream for me. I’m awaiting the day when I wear the national team’s jersey. However, it depends on the national coach’s decision. What will you do when you say goodbye to football? I’m 30 and my football career is still ahead of me, but I’m also working on my dream to establish a goalkeeper training centre. There is nothing like that in Vietnam now so why I don’t apply my skill and talent to this interesting job? Do you intend to bear Phan as your Vietnamese last name as you stated before? I’ve changed my mind and I want to keep my old name. I don’t know whether Vietnamese law allows me to do so or not because that’s the way I remember my roots and keep something from Brazil. |

22 Year old Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa claims he will be joining Manchester United soon. Ochoa, who is said to cost around $13 million, says it would break his heart to leave his current team Club America but would love to join United. Mancunian scouts have been spotted at Ochoa’s games and it is to be expected that he makes the move when the transfer window re-opens in January. Ochoa claimed: "There have been people scouting me and I have been approached and have had talks. They (Man Utd) are a great team and it is possible something will be done." Dutch Great goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is approaching the end of his career and backup keeper Ben Foster is still sidelined with a knee injury so manager Ferguson does seem to have a need in the goalkeeping department. |

Belgian native Jean-Marie was always good for headlines during his days. In 1986 he took part in a celebration with the National Team and in a gesture of appreciation to the fans his threw his jacket into the crowd but forgot he left his wallet in the jacket’s pocket.....As goalkeeper for Bayern Munich he made himself immortal because of his “Pfaff-German”. Even lately he managed to make the headlines by bursting out in tears during an interview when reminded of an incident with Enzo Scifo and by kicking a black gardener while on vacation. Click on his picture below to see one of his famous “Pfaff-Deutsch” interviews. |

Manchester City’s manager Sven Goran Eriksson has a difficult choice to make. Kasper Schmeichel was the starting goalkeeper at the beginning of the season and has since been replaced by Joe Hart. Then Hart lost his place to Andreas Isaksson after City’s 6-0 loss to Chelsea FC. "They are both good goalkeepers who deserve to play," said Eriksson of Hart and Isaksson. "I have not made my mind up. While Joe did not play at Bolton Wanderers it had nothing to do with the Chelsea result. We had decided before that game to change goalkeepers for the cup game." Hart Isaksson |

Arsene Wenger left no doubt about it this weekend when he was asked about the goalkeeping situation at Arsenal. "Almunia is doing a great job for us, I am going to stick with one goalkeeper for now. A return of Lehmann is not relevant at this point in time." Arsenal drew 2-2 against Manchester United this weekend and although Almunia did not make any major mistakes, he didn't look all that solid on both goals. But Wenger reassured everybody that Almunia will be in goal against Slavia Prague this week. |

Tottenham Hotspur’s goalkeeper Paul Robinson has been under fire lately at his club as well as at the National Team level. Spur’s manager Martin Jol always kept faith in him and continued to play him but Jol was replaced by Juande Ramos last week and one of his first decisions was to pursue Udinese goalkeeper Samir Handanovic. The 23 year old Slovenian goalkeeper is regarded to be amongst Europe’s biggest talents and tops the Spurs’ list to be signed in January. Robinson meanwhile, does not seem to be too concerned. He said: "We will see what happens and whether he makes any signings but I am confident I am No 1 at this club and that it will stay that way. It's very pleasing for me to get a first win for a few weeks and a clean sheet as well. It came on my 150th appearance for the club so it was a good night all round. I feel totally fit now after my calf problem. I'm just delighted to be back." |

CD Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan was named MLS Panasonic Goalkeeper of the Year yesterday. The winner of this prestigious award is determined by votes from the media, MLS players and General Managers and MLS Coaches. The 23 year old goalkeeper had a career season averaging only 0.93 GAA in 27 games played. He also registered 13 shutouts which is the second highest in league history. "It's an honor to have been chosen Panasonic Goalkeeper of the Year," Guzan said. "I want to thank my parents, my coaches and Chivas USA's passionate fans for their support. I especially want to thank my Chivas USA teammates, with whom I share this award, because it is our work together as a group that has allowed us to succeed this season." Credit also goes to his goalkeeper coach, Zak Abdel, whom we recently interviewed for our website. To read the interview, click here. |

It appears that Jens Lehmann now completely blew it with Manager Arsene Wenger. The controversial German goalkeeper was not on the roster for Arsenal’s Carling Cup match against Sheffield United. Normally the manager plays the second goalkeeper in this lower ranked tournament but Lehmann wasn’t even on the bench. Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski is starting in goal with 4th goalkeeper Vito Mannone as his backup. It appears that Lehmann is now paying the toll for his recent provocative remarks in the media. “It is my opinion that players don’t need to be humiliated for too long,” Lehmann claims during a German TV interview. “There is a possibility that I will give my opinion about this whole situation (isn’t that what got you in trouble in the first place????). I am quietly experiencing this humiliation but I am not just going to go away.” |

Italy powerhouse Internazionale di Milan is facing a goalkeeper problem. First goalkeeper Francesco Toldo had surgery on his foot this morning and is expected to be out for at least six weeks. Manager Roberto Mancini also had to scratch backup goalie Julio Cesar off his list since he is suffering from a back injury. So 35 year old, third goalkeeper Paolo Orlandini is expected to be in goal when Inter plays Genoa tomorrow night. |
