The soap amongst German goalkeepers did not get any better this week. Tim Wiese, Werder Bremen’s goalkeeper, was noted saying the following in a newspaper interview: I have been playing with Werder on a high level for 3 years. In the Bundesliga, the UEFA Cup as well as the Champions League have I always performed well. Even so, I have never been called up for the National Team. For me that chapter is closed” Jens Lehmann has been the starting goalkeeper for the German National team with Valencia keeper Timo Hildrebrand as his back-up. Third goalkeeper has been Hannover’s Robert Enke and this week National Team coach Joachim Löw had young goalie Manuel Neuer from Schalke take some physical tests. Again, apparently no room for poor Tim Wiese. Just a side note Tim, that chpater that you closed; has it even started for you? |

Slovenian goalkeeper Stefan Senecky will transfer from FC Nitra to Ankaraspor immediately. The Turkish side, currently in last place in the standings, signed the 27 year old goalkeeper to a two year deal. The ink on the contracts dried just in time before the closing of the transfer window last night at midnight Turkish time. Senecky just recently made his goalkeeping debut for the Slovenian national team on August 22nd when they played France. |

Swansea City will be signing ‘Boro’s young goalkeeper David Knight to a one year deal today. The 20 year old former Oldham and Darlington keeper also played on the England National Youth Teams, but could never really break into Middlesbrough’s first squad. Swansea manager Roberto Martinez was happy to sign the Riverside goalkeeper after being on the lookout for a new goalie ever since Gueret signed with MK Dons. Knight is the only expected signing on deadline day and will be joining goalkeepers Dorus de Vries and youngster Callum Hawthorne. |

SS Lazio Roma’s manager Delio Rossi (picture) seems to have solved his goalkeeping problems. The Roman club signed Uruguay youngster Fernando Musiera to replace retired goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi. The 21 year old goalkeeper was signed from Nacional in Uruguay, and became a prospect after Juan Pablo Carrizo didn’t manage to get an Italian passport. Lazio however still has hope to bring Carrizo in early next year. |

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger seems to be changing his tone on the goalkeeper situation at Arsenal somewhat. Where just 9 days ago Wenger publicly claimed Lehmann would continue to be his ‘Number 1 Goalkeeper’ he is now hinting at having Manuel Almunia play even when Jens does come back from his injury. “He (Almunia) does deserve a chance. Whether Jens remains my number one goalkeeper is something we will determine game to game. If I now claim that Jens, when he recovers, will be starting goalkeeper no matter what then I would also be claiming that Almunia will be benched no matter what. That’s almost like saying his performance is not important.” |

Argentine National Team Coach Carlos “Alfo” Basile called up goalkeeper Sergio Romero again for the friendly against Australia, being played in two weeks in Melbourne. Romero was also called up for the match against Norway but never saw any playing time. Unfortunately he has Getafe goalkeepers Abbondanzieri and Ustari ahead of him. Surprisingly Copa America star Riquelme was not invited for the trip Down Under. |

Goalkeeper Alberto “Pato” Abbondanzieri is rumoured to be joining Lazio Roma this week from Getafe, which held La Liga record last year for fewest goals conceded (33). The Argentine goalie had an opportunity to move to Manchester City but kindly declined their offer. He might be more likely to make the move to the Stadio Olimpico squad with the prospect of playing Champios League soocer. Lazio is in need of another goalkeeper because of the long-term injury to Juan Pablo Carizzo, and they currently start 43 year old keeper Marco Ballotta. Getafe already contracted Pato’s successor; earlier this summer they signed Oscar Ustari whom is expected to not only replace Pato at Getafe, but also eventually as the Argentina National Team number one goalkeeper. |

He was also rumored to be pusued by Norwich and AEK Athens. “But the interest of Celtic is the greatest.” Danek told Czech newspaper Sport. “Next week I am going to visit the club. If this (transfer) was possible, I would certainly not refuse it. Celtic a great club, I am going to fly there to see how it looks.” |

Veteran goalkeeper Kasey Keller is back in the UK. After playing for recently relegated Borussia Mönchengladbach for two and a half years the 37 year old will be joining Fulham this week. Keller was signed because Fulham’s first goalkeeper Antti Niemi is sidelined due to an injury, which occured 3 weeks ago during the warm-up before their match against Arsenal. Ever since then 33 year old Tony Warner has been in between the posts for Fulham but he is now expected to be back-up goalkeeper to Keller. Fulham is not Keller’s first Premier League club. He played goalkeeper for the Spurs from 2001 until January of 2005, and he also played for Millwall and Leicester City. Just last month Keller announced that he would retire should he not find a good team to play for. “If Fulham makes you an offer, it’s certainly not something you have to think about for very long” Keller said. |

Liverpool’s recent signing Nikolay Mihaylov joined Dutch side FC Twente this week on loan. The Reds just recently signed the 19 year old Bulgarian talent to a five year deal from Levski Sofia but he has been unsuccessful to obtain a work permit for the UK so far. While his request is being processed, he will play with Twente where he is expected to be third goalkeeper behind Sander Boschker and Cees Paauwe. Interesting detail about Mihaylov is that his father Boris is not only the president of the Bulgarian Football Union, he also earned a record 105 caps as a goalkeeper for his country. On top of that, Nikolay’s grand father Bisser Mihaylov also played goalkeeper for Levski Sofia, this being in the 60’s. |
